How to Handle a Medical Emergency Before Help Arrives

Emergencies are stressful and often unexpected.  For families in the Golden Triangle emergency region of Southeast Texas, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a noticeable difference.  Our emergency center sees firsthand how calm, simple actions can stabilize a situation while professional help is on the way.

Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

Taking a deep breath helps you think clearly and act with purpose.  Quickly check the person’s condition.  Ask questions like – Are they conscious? Bleeding? Breathing normally? Staying composed guarantees you can accurately communicate the right information to 911.  This type of clear communication is essential in any Golden Triangle emergency situation.

Provide Basic First Aid When Appropriate

Simple, safe steps can make a big difference while waiting for help:

  • Minor to moderate cuts: Apply pressure with a clean cloth.
  • Small burns: Cool gently with running water.
  • Dizziness or fainting: Have them lie down and elevate their legs.

These are also situations where, after initial care, our emergency facility can evaluate and treat the issue once the immediate danger has passed.

Keep the Person Comfortable

Offer reassurance, help them stay warm, and encourage slow breathing.  Sometimes the calm presence of a family member is the most stabilizing thing during a Golden Triangle emergency situation.

Have a Household Emergency Plan

Being prepared can make any emergency smoother to handle.  Consider:

  • Keeping a first aid kit stocked
  • Making sure everyone knows how to call 911
  • Saving the address and directions to our emergency facility
  • Having important contacts in your phone
  • Teaching older kids basic safety steps

Preparation helps you respond quickly when seconds matter.
