Common Misconceptions about Freestanding Emergency Rooms

Freestanding emergency rooms play an important role in the healthcare system and help millions of Americans get the care they need, quickly. However, they aren’t identical to traditional hospital-based emergency rooms and some patients may have some misconceptions about the way they work. Unfortunately these misconceptions can interfere with patients getting the quality care that they need or may simply set the patient up for frustration. GTEC will be hosting an open-house event on Monday, January 9th from 8:00am to 8:00pm at their Orange facility in which we will be addressing some common misconceptions about freestanding emergency rooms. In the meantime, in this article let’s take a look at three of the most pervasive ones.

Misconception: Patients Are Treated on a First-Come, First-Serve Basis

This misconception isn’t specific to freestanding emergency rooms, but rather tends to apply to traditional ERs as well. People often wrongly assume that emergency room treatment will be performed much like the other services they are familiar with: on a first-come, first serve basis in which the person who arrives first is treated first. However, that is not the case with freestanding or traditional emergency rooms. Instead, ERs use what is known as the triage system.

The triage system involves evaluating the patient’s injury or illness to determine how severe it is and how urgently that patient needs care. Thus, someone who comes in complaining about symptoms that could indicate a heart attack is likely to be treated by someone who is waiting to be treated for nausea or headache. Likewise a gunshot victim will likely be seen ahead of a patient with a sprained leg. This is regardless of what order the patients entered the facility in.

The triage system can be frustrating for patients who have been waiting a long time for treatment for a relatively less serious injury or illness, but it is an extremely valuable tool that saves countless lives. Fortunately, patients at freestanding emergency rooms like GTEC will benefit from much shorter wait times and a more comfortable environment than at traditional ERs.

Misconception: Patients Can Use Medicare or Medicaid to Pay for Treatment

Patients of freestanding emergency rooms often assume that they can use Medicare or Medicaid to pay for the treatment, just like they would be able to at a traditional hospital-based ER. However, unfortunately this is not correct. Under federal law freestanding emergency rooms are not able to accept Medicare or Medicaid because they are not a part of a hospital system. For more information about this topic please see our article on Why Freestanding Emergency Rooms Cannot Accept Medicare and Medicaid.

However, rest assured that freestanding emergency rooms like GTEC make it as convenient as possible to pay for treatment. We accept all private health insurance plans as well as Tricare. We also have payment plans available and convenient bill pay options like online payments and the ability to accept credit and debit cards.

If you are having a medical emergency you can still come to Golden Triangle Emergency Center no matter what insurance you have.

Misconception: If I Need to be Transferred to a Hospital I’ll Have to Wait Again

Some emergency room trips may result in the patient requiring admission into the hospital. This may occur because the patient needs surgery and extensive treatment or simply an extended stay for observation. Many patients assume that since freestanding emergency rooms aren’t connected to a hospital, if they require hospitalization they will be have to wait a second time in the hospital’s ER to be admitted.

Fortunately this is not the case. Freestanding emergency rooms have the ability to observe patients for up to 23 hours and 59 minutes before having to transfer them to a hospital. Freestanding emergency rooms are often able to get patients admitted directly to the hospital quickly and conveniently, without the need to wait a second time.

How to Stay Healthy During This Holiday Season

With every holiday season, comes the threat of coughs, colds and more serious illnesses, like influenza. We want the members of our community to enjoy the holidays, not be stuck in bed with a fever or the sniffles.

Hear from one of our board certified emergency physicians, Dr. Crossley, on some common flu myths, treatments and how to determine if you’ve got the flu, or just a cold.

How to Stay Healthy During This Holiday Season

Q: Does getting the flu vaccine mean I can’t get flu?

A: A common misconception is that you can’t get the flu if you’ve had a flu shot. The flu shot protects you from some, but not all strains of the flu.

This is why it’s important to get your flu vaccine every year. Even if you’ve been immunized, it’s possible you can get the flu, although unlikely. You can ask your physician about how the vaccines have been altered to protect against the newest strains of influenza or visit the CDC’s page on the 2016-2017 flu season.

Q: How do I know if I have the flu or just a common cold?

A: It’s hard to know if you have just a cold or the flu. With the flu, more serious symptoms will be present, like a fever and body aches. If you’re unsure, get yourself checked out by a physician.

You may also experience the following symptoms with influenza.

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue and drowsiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dehydration

Your body is working overtime while you’re sick to fight off the illness. Don’t push yourself to do anything strenuous, like exercise or you may worsen your condition.

Q: How do I protect myself from flu?

A: The best prevention against the flu is to wash your hands and get the flu shot.

If you’re not sure about where to wash your hands, check out our infographic!

Q: What should I be doing at home while I’m resting with the flu?

A: Some at home remedies that can speed up your recovery are rest, lots of clear fluids, and chicken noodle soup.

While chicken noodle soup has no proven medicinal properties, you can’t underestimate the power of a warming, homemade meal. Just avoid the canned version as it contains lots of sodium. Plus, it’s easy on your stomach, which means you won’t worsen any nausea and you’ll be replacing vital nutrients.

How to Act Quickly in a Diabetic Emergency

Over 29 million people have diabetes in the U.S., nearly 10% of the total population.

With numbers that staggering, it makes diabetes one of the most common diseases, and chances are that you know someone who’s been affected by diabetes.

During this National Diabetes Awareness Month, we want our community to be ready for any emergency they may encounter. The best way to prepare for a diabetic emergency, also called diabetic shock, is to research the symptoms of these attacks and learn how to react quickly and effectively. Keep reading to learn more.

What is a diabetic emergency?

A diabetic emergency, or diabetic shock, can occur when there is either too much sugar in the blood (hyperglycemia) or too little sugar in the blood (hypoglycemia). Often, diabetic individuals will feel dizzy and their skin may appear grey or pale during an attack. The key to stopping a diabetic emergency before it progresses is to recognize the symptoms. Look for these signs.

  • Dry skin that may be warm to the touch
  • Drowsiness
  • Dazed or glossed-over look
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Rapid pulse and labored breathing
  • Sickly sweet breath
  • Excessive thirst

If the person isn’t taken immediately to an emergency room, they may faint, have a seizure or even fall into a coma. Knowing that someone has diabetes certainly makes it easier to recognize these symptoms and act quickly. If you see someone in public, like at a restaurant or gym, exhibiting some of these signs, check their person for any medical identifying tags. These are often worn as bracelets or necklaces and will provide contact information in the case of a diabetic emergency. This is the quickest way to ensure they’re treated properly.

 Act quickly

Once you’ve identified the symptoms, the next step is to determine if their blood sugar is too low or too high. Don’t ever assume that a diabetic individual experiencing an attack has low blood sugar as opposed to high blood sugar. If the individual is conscious, ask them what they’ve eaten that day. This will ensure that you’re helping to balance their blood sugar levels, not lower or increase them even more dangerously.

If their levels are too low, give them a sugary food or drink they can quickly eat, like:

  • Sodas
  • Fruit juices
  • Candy
  • Applesauce

Check for glucose gel packs on their person, too. If their levels are too high, give them lots of fluids. This will help to replace the nutrients lost through urination and dilute sugar in the blood. If available, give them electrolytes packs to help their tissues begin to function normally again.

How to Act Quickly in a Diabetic Emergency

If the individual is unconscious, try some of these tips while you wait on emergency first responders.

If they’re unconscious, become unconscious or their vitals don’t improve, call 911 immediately. Continue to monitor their vitals until medical emergency teams arrive.

We’re encouraging members of our community to learn more about this disease during this National Diabetes Awareness Month. For information about diabetic emergencies, visit this page.

Let us know if you’ve ever been in a situation where you had to act quickly and how you handled it!

Tips for Surviving Fall Allergies

Good news for residents in the Texas Golden Triangle region: fall is here and with it we are getting some relief from the notorious Texas summer heat. Unfortunately fall also brings allergy season and for some unlucky allergy suffers the cooler temperatures are hardly any consolation. Fortunately, even extreme allergies can usually be managed with careful lifestyle adjustments and good medical care. Before you give up and sneeze your way to winter consider the following tips for surviving fall allergy season.

Know Your Situation

The first step for finding relief from your allergies is to determine what you’re allergic to. You may be allergic to ragweed and pollen, but it could also be fungi or mold, pet dander, dust, or a combination of these. If you are unsure what is causing your allergies consult a doctor who can perform an allergy test to help diagnose your allergy.

Limit Exposure When Possible

Once you have determined that you are indeed suffering from allergies and also what type of allergies, the next step is to limit exposure as much as possible. For example if a tree, bush, weed, or other plant is primarily to blame, you may want to consider having it removed from your property for when it is in bloom or has a high pollen count.

You can also get daily pollen forecasts the same way you do with weather forecasts, some weather or news forecasts include them. If not consider getting pollen count information online or with a free app on your smartphone. When the pollen count is particularly high you may want to stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure. If you have to be outside for long periods of time for yardwork or other chores, consider wearing an allergy mask.

Allergen Proof Your Home

There are also steps you can take to allergen proof your home. Start by making sure that your windows and doors are well sealed and make sure to use the air conditioning or a fan during allergy season rather than opening a window. Next consider getting HEPA filters for your AC or even a dedicated air purifying machine. Make sure to do your research and be sure that the filter or machine you are getting will help with your allergies. Also be sure to shop around for the best deals and read consumer reviews.

Don’t skimp on house cleaning during allergy season. Vacuum, dust, and scrub surfaces often to remove as many allergens as possible. Don’t forget to wash curtain and drapes, throw pillows, blankets, and other bedding. Carpeting and rugs, attract, trap, and hold more allergens than smooth, non-fabric surfaces, like hardwood, tile, linoleum.

When coming home for the day make sure to take off your shoes and change your clothes so that you are no longer in contact with the allergens you picked up outside. Remember this also applies to other family members and pets. That means it’s important to make sure the whole family is on board for limiting allergy exposure and that it may be necessary to bathe your dog or other inside/outside pet more often than you normally would.

Medication Options

There are also some great medication options for allergy suffers. After discussing a treatment plan with your doctor, you may want to consider one or a combination of the following:

  • Over-the-counter antihistamines and allergy medications
  • Prescription allergy medications
  • Steroid nasal sprays
  • Saline-only nasal sprays
  • Allergy pump inhalers
  • Allergy shots

Different treatment options have different pros and cons including side effects, risks, cost, and of course efficacy. Remember that what works well for one person may not be as effective for another. It is important to discuss your allergy treatment with your doctor so that you can come up with a plan that works best for you. Don’t get discouraged and give up. Keep looking until you find an allergy treatment plan that allows you to have a healthy, high quality life.

Golden Triangle Emergency Center’s goal is always to provide the resources our community needs to stay safe and healthy in the first place. How to Determine if You’re at Risk for Breast Cancer

Nearly 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the CDC.

1 in 8 women. With numbers that staggering, it’s more than likely you know someone that’s been impacted directly or indirectly by breast cancer. Maybe it’s even your life that’s been turned upside down by this devastating disease. For many men and women, breast cancer is a very real threat in their lives.

While there’s no cure, we can make efforts to become more informed about our individual risk factors. Unsure if you’re at risk? We’ve listed some of the most common risk factors known to increase your chances of breast cancer below. Read through them to help you decide upon an appropriate breast health plan.

  1. Unusually early menstrual period. Women who had their period early, before eleven years of age, are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer later in life.
  2. Aging. As we get older, our cells change and deteriorate, making them more susceptible to mutation. Most breast cancers are diagnosed after 50.
  3. Late menopause. Just like an early period increases your risk, so does late menopause. Being exposed to estrogen in high amounts for longer periods significantly raises your chances of breast cancer.
  4. Family and personal history. If your mother, grandmother or sister have been diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, you also have an increased chance of breast cancer. Don’t worry as much if it’s a great aunt or cousin – it’ll have to be a close relation to indicate increased risk. And if you’ve ever been diagnosed with pre-cancerous conditions, like LCIS, make sure you’re making regular appointments to monitor breast health.
  5. Breast composition. It may sound strange, but more dense, “muscle-y,” breasts have a greater chance of developing abnormal, cancerous cells than less dense, fatty breasts. This simply means that your breasts have more connective tissue than fatty tissue, which may make it difficult to see tumors.
  6. Some birth control. Some birth control pills have been linked to an increased chance of breast cancer. Speak with your physician about your birth control to learn more.
  7. No pregnancies. If you’ve never carried a pregnancy full term, or you became pregnant only once you were older, you have an increased risk of breast cancer.
  8. Inactivity and obesity. Women who are significantly overweight and unfit have increased chances of breast cancer. This is especially true for women who are going through menopause.
  9. Hormone therapy. During and after menopause, women often take hormone pills to alleviate symptoms. If you’re on hormone therapy for longer than 5 years, you have an increased risk for breast cancer.

It’s important to remember that these are only risk factors, which indicate an increased, not guaranteed, chance of breast cancer. Many women have at least one of these factors and are never diagnosed with breast cancer. The best way to decrease your chances of breast cancer are to be well-researched about your individual risk and develop a breast health plan.
